Things to bring to school

Every day:  reading diary and reading book

Wednesday – Completed learning log (homework)

 Wednesday - PE  (please BRING a PE kit of a white t-shirt and blue or black shorts)

Please remember to bring a coat in cold and/or rainy weather

Homework information

• There will be a learning log challenge that will be set every Wednesday, which should be returned to school by the following Wednesday.  Homework help is on Microsoft Teams every week. Please bring back homework on time to avoid any consequences.  
• Children are given spellings every Monday (in their reading record) to learn at home. They need to remember them for the spelling test on Friday.  
• We also expect that the children will be spending time reading and learning their times tables at home.  

We ask that you initial all completed homework and reading for your child in their homework diaries. Thank you.

Topic: Industrial Revolution

A history focus

Industrial Revolution

 We will be learning about changes in Ashton-under-Lyne as a direct result of the Industrial Revolution including jobs, buildings, innovation, and transport. This is an aspect of history that altered the whole of Britain and is significant in our locality. We will also be learning about the inventions that helped bring about the Industrial Revolution in England. We will be exploring how key events (such as child labour laws) and individuals of the past.  Some of the people who have helped shape the modern world are Isambard Kingdom Brunel and Thomas Telford. We will be making comparisons between then and now and we will use our knowledge to explain why some things have changed, and other things have stayed the same in our locality. 

English

You can find all of the weekly spellings on the spelling app (on this website). Children will be reading a range of texts including fiction, non-fiction and poetry.

Maths

• Week 1: Addition and Subtraction - problem solving (Revise rounding)

• Week 3:  Square and cube numbers (Revise x by 10, 100,1000)
• Week 4 - 7: Fractions

Other subjects

• In science, we are learning about levers, gears and pulleys. After that, we will sort materials according to their properties. 
• In computing, we are creating posters and PowerPoint materials for internet safety
• In French, we are saying 'Je suis le musicien' -  I am a musician!
• In PSHCE, we are learning about staying safe online and the SEALs theme is 'Getting on and Falling out' 

  Reading: Owen and Mzee

• In RE, we are considering why Christians think Jesus is the Messiah but many other religions don't 
• In art, we will be looking at the work of LS Lowry and how he captured the industrial landscape in his paintings of Greater Manchester

Children will have the homework explained to them before they bring it home. Labels will be in their homework books and help on 'Teams'. Thank you for helping them! You assistance is appreciated. 

Year 5 – Educational Visits

At St. James’ Church of England Primary School, we believe that our children should have the opportunity to enjoy many experiences to enrich their lives and learning. As a result, we have planned a series of educational visits for the children. These include:

Friday 11^th November 2022 Media City for Blue Peter. 8am pick up – 12.30 return

Thursday 17^th November 2022:  Ashton cinema for film festival – The Railway Children. 10-11.45am

Thursday 24^th November 2022: Industrial Revolution - Park Bridge Heritage Trail. 9am-11.30am

Thursday 1^st December 2022: Forces and Flight - Museum of Science and Industry. 9am – 3.30pm
