We have another busy half-term planned full of brilliant learning and activities!

- 3 worksheets (maths, reading comprehension and grammar)- set on Wednesday and to be returned the following Monday

Our topic this half term is a history topic: PEOPLE, POWER AND PROTEST.
We will start by looking at the role of the UK parliament because the first week of the term happens to be UK Parliament week! This is a brilliant introduction to our topic. If you want any more information you can follow this link. https://www.ukparliamentweek.org/en/
We will study:
- The Gunpowder plot and decide whether Guy Fawkes was guilty or not. We will debate and vote on the issue
- The Magna Carta and its legacy
- How democracy has changed under different monarchs
- How and why people have protested throughout history including the suffragettes and contemporary protests such as Black Lives Matter and Climate Change
We will use our art skills to produce drawings of people representing the theme of protest.

English
In English we are studying Macbeth - an example of how power can corrupt - and we will be using diary entries and drama to understand the characters. We will write an investigative report looking at where and how it all went wrong for him!
Then we will move on to writing our own horror stories by looking at some short films. We will write our own narratives building up suspense and using powerful vocabulary to describe.
In addition to our writing, there will be a weekly spelling and handwriting session, two grammar lessons, one whole class reading plus lesson and four whole class reading sessions.

We will be investigating the following questions:
- What are inherited traits?
- What are the reasons for artificial breeding?
- How have some plants and animals adapted to their environments?
- What is the process of natural selection? (Darwin's theory of evolution)
- How do fossils support the theory of evolution?
In RE this half term our topic is the Christian idea of Jesus as the Messiah. We will look at the idea of the Messiah meaning a hero - someone who has come to 'save the day' for a group of people.
Autumn Term 1
Welcome to year 6!
We are all very excited to start this new year with such a brilliant bunch of young people and we have lots of amazing activities planned for you! We want you to work hard, ask questions, challenge yourselves, have fun and grow in confidence. This is the final year of primary school and we aim to help you make the most of it!

PLEASE REMEMBER TO BRING READING BOOKS AND READING DIARIES TO SCHOOL EVERY DAY!
Homework- given out on Wednesday, return to school on Monday. There will be spellings, maths homework, English homework and reading books.
PE- Wednesdays. Please can the children come into school in their uniform and get changed into their PE kits at school. They will come home in their PE kit (with their uniform in their bag).
Cafe Church- Tuesday 11th October 2022 at St James' Church. Parents are invited to join the year 6 children and staff in church to celebrate all of the brilliant work that the children have done so far this year. We would love it if you could join us. There will be tea, coffee and biscuits available!

Our topic this first half term is The Journey
We will be exploring the experiences of refugees, particularly from a child's perspective, and will look at the reasons people have to flee their countries, the perilous journeys they undertake and the hope of a better future they carry with them, This topic will help us explore wider issues of tolerance and respect and encourage us to have a more global view of the world we all share.
Our main text is The Boy at the Back of the Class by Onjali Rauf. This is the story about how one ordinary nine-year-old child and three classmates are full of empathy for Ahmet, a boy who comes to their school as a refugee from Syria.
We will also look at a range of other books, which present the topic in different ways.
We will produce poems, narratives and news bulletins.
In addition in English, all children will do a daily reading lesson where we explore different reading skills using a new text each week.
There is a weekly Grammar focus in our SPAG (spelling, punctuation and grammar) lessons and there will be weekly spellings to learn.
As part of our topic:
- In GEOGRAPHY we will follow the journeys taken by refugees
- In ART we will sketch portraits showing emotions
- In DT we will make Biryani and look at the origins of some of the ingredients we use in our everyday cooking in the UK
- in PSHCE we will learn how to be tolerant and respect the beliefs of others
Maths
To support our learning in Maths, we will be using Power Maths. This half term, we will be focusing on place value in numbers up to 10,000,000 (unit 1), calculating using addition, subtraction, multiplication and division (units 2 and 3) and we will finish off the half term learning about fractions (unit 4).

Science
We will be learning all about light (and shadows) by building upon all the great learning you did on this in year 3. We will investigate the way in which light travels as well as how the human eye enables us to see things.
And for the rest of the curriculum this half term:
- In RE we will look at what it means to be a Muslim in the UK today
- In Computing we are going to consolidate research, word processing and powerpoint skills
- In French we will learn about school subjects and how to give opinions
Welcome to Spring term 2
We have another busy half term ahead of us! The SATs test take place week beginning 9 May, and we are going to be busy making sure that all the children are really well prepared and confident. We want them to go into that week full of confidence that they can do their absolute best. If we have invited your child in for revision sessions, can we please ask you to encourage them to attend.

Our topic this half term is AMAZING AMAZON. Our knowledge organiser for the half term is below.
In English this half term we will be linking our learning - especially our writing - to our topic and will be looking at issues around climate change and deforestation.
To start with, we are going to read Greta and the Giants which tells the story of Greta Thunberg and her campaign to raise awareness of climate change.

We will be re-writing the story for older readers.
Following on from this, we will be writing speeches to raise awareness and persuade people to take action on climate change.
Also in English there will be daily reading sessions and we will be giving the children plenty of opportunities to practice for the upcoming reading and GPS tests.
AMAZING AMAZON
In our topic lessons we will start by looking at the location of Brazil, and the countries which border it, on a world map and on google maps and investigate different regions of Brazil and their features.
We will also be researching different biomes and ecosystems around the world.
Deforestation is the clearing, or cutting down, of forests. The word is normally used to describe the actions of humans in removing forests from the planet, rather than destruction caused by such natural events as hurricanes. Currently, the rainforests (the so-called "lungs of the earth") are being destroyed at an alarming rate. We will be investigating the reasons for this and how it can be prevented.

We have been super impressed with all the brilliant work class 6 have done so far this year! What a fantastic attitude to learning you all have!

Our topic this half term is AbStRAcT!

In English, we will be watching the short film CHAPERON ROUGE - a dark take on the traditional Little Red Riding Hood story, and writing to create atmosphere and suspense. Following that - and continuing the wolf theme! - we are going to investigate and write information texts about the rewilding of wolves in Yellowstone National Park. Our core text for this will be Fourteen Wolves by Catherine Barr.
"In fairy tales, the wolf's cry makes people shudder. They've been hunted, captured. But the wolf carries a wild magic - a magic that once restored a barren land. When wolves disappeared from Yellowstone Park in the 1930s, the ecosystem started to collapse. Enormous herds of elk swarmed the plains, bears starved, rabbit families shrunk and birds flew away to new homes. Plants vanished, trees withered and rivers meandered. Until in 1995, wolves returned to the park and everything began to change for the better. This is the story of their homecoming."
Finally, to finish the half term, we will write biographies of Gustav Klimt.
There will be weekly spelling and grammar lessons as well as five reading sessions per week.
In Maths, we will be covering the units of Power Maths listed below. In addition to the daily maths lesson, there will be a weekly arithmetic test and daily reasoning practice.

In Science, we will be learning about electricity. We will be using equipment to help us find out how electricity flows around a circuit. We will learn the names and symbols for the components in an electrical circuit. We will find out how the brightness of a bulb or volume of a buzzer can be altered by the number of components in a circuit.
