At St James' Church of England Primary School, we recognise that a high-quality science education provides the foundations for understanding the world.

Science has changed our lives and is vital to the world’s future. Through building up a body of knowledge and concepts, pupils should develop a sense of excitement and curiosity about natural phenomena. They should feel encouraged to understand how science can be used to explain what is occurring, predict how things will behave, and analyse causes. Experiences in science help children develop problem-solving skills and motivate them toward a lifelong interest in the natural world.

There are so many careers in science that children may go on to pursue, including: chemist, doctor, nurse, vet, ecologist, electrician, microbiologist, forensic scientist, sports scientist, phycologist, pathologist, zoologist and many more!

 Science in the National Curriculum:

• Children will develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding.
• Children will develop understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science through different types of science enquiries that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them.
• Children will be equipped with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future.

EYFS science includes:

Exploring how things work, using all their senses in hands-on exploration of natural materials, planting seeds and caring for growing plants, understanding the key features of the life cycle of a plant and an animal, exploring collections of materials with similar and/or different properties, talking about different forces they can feel, and about the differences between materials and changes they notice. 

Year 1 science includes:

Every day materials, plants, seasonal changes and animals - including humans

Year 2 science includes: 

Uses of every day materials, animals - including humans, living things and their habitats, and plants

Year 3 science includes: 

Forces and magnets, rocks, plants, light and animals - including humans

Year 4 science includes:

States of matter (solid, liquid, gas), sound, living things and their habitats, electricity and animals - including humans

Year 5 science includes:

Forces, properties and changes of materials, earth and space, animals - including humans, living things and their habitats

Year 6 science includes:

Light, animals - including humans, electricity, living things and their habitats, and evolution and inheritance
